This editorial letter originally in WQP Faces of the Industry 2021 issue as "Celebrating from a Distance"
In a time when many of us in the water industry have been unable to gather face-to-face for nearly a year, it is my hope that this year’s Faces of the Industry issue bridges connections and makes readers feel a little bit closer to their peers from a distance.
While year-round WQP works to bring you updates on the latest trends and technologies, the spring Faces of the Industry issue takes time to celebrate the people that make this industry a successful and valuable place to work and grow. Yet this year’s issue in particular — as the world still struggles with the ramifications of a global pandemic — has felt like a gift to connect.
Throughout 2020, members of the water industry submitted nominations for WQP’s award programs. The WQP editorial team then selected Charles “Chubb” Michaud, CEO and technical director for Systematix Co., as this year’s Industry Icon. The time I spent speaking with Michaud to piece together his story was an honor. After all, how often does one have the opportunity to pick the brain of a successful 60-year water industry veteran and unpack the how and why of his professional philosophies? I hope that shines through. Moreover, Michaud’s dedication to continuously learning and sharing knowledge to enhance the industry as a whole is a valuable trait we can all aspire to cultivate.
Similarly, this year’s class of Young Professionals is poised to push beyond the bounds of what is comfortable into what is exceptional, many of which have launched businesses or led their peers throughout an unprecedented time. Their stories give me hope for a bright future.
To all of our readers, I hope the following stories warm your heart, as they have mine. If you are interested in nominating a peer or yourself for our 2022 Young Professionals and Industry Icon programs, I encourage you to head to wqpmag.com/nominations.
